You crawl into bed after a long, tiring day. You’re welcomed by cool sheets, warm blankets, and a soft place to rest your weary head. As you turn on your side, you find your pets, trying to find their own comfortable spot on the floor. Just like you, every dog and cat needs their very own cozy place.

All pet beds are not created equal. The same is especially true with regards to the size of pet beds which may vary greatly. A medium bed by one designer may be considered a large by another. Therefore, it is a good rule of thumb get a bed’s dimensions and see if your pet would be comfortable in that amount of space.

Remember, when selecting a pet bed, bigger is better. You will want to make sure that your pet has room to move around in the bed in order to find a comfortable position. As we all know dogs like to shift around a little when they sleep. Also if you have a puppy or kitten, make sure to get a bed that is big enough, with room for your pet to grow.

Pet beds come in a few basic types: pillow/mattress and nests. To select the right type for your pet, you can do a little naptime investigating.

A nest bed is a great choice for a pet who likes to sleep curled up in a ball. This type of bed will enclose your pet in comfort as well as providing them with a place of her own. For nest type beds or furniture that has sides, measure the length of your pet while he is curled up sleeping. Measure from the top of his head to the base of his tail and then add 6 to 8 inches.

Maybe your pet loves to stretch. If so, a pillow/mattress bed is your best choice. This bed will allow for more room to toss, turn and stretch. If you’re planning on purchasing a pillow, mattress or mat type dog bed for your pooch, then measure your dog from his nose to the base of his tail, and add 10 inches.
